Japanese Connections and Collaborations

Musubi, a project by First Of March, is a living legacy project that honours and respects the craftsmanship and design of Makers in both Wales and Japan.

While the term "Musubi" is rooted in the traditional world of Japanese textiles, particularly kimonos, for First of March it signifies the connections and relationships forged with Japanese companies and Makers during Wales Year in Japan.

This initiative is driven by a mutual passion for innovation, design, and craftsmanship which celebrates the wonderful heritage at the heart of beautiful contemporary Japanese and Welsh design, showcasing stunning textile creations that have pushed the art of what is possible across international boundaries, culture and language.

The first presentation of Musubi will be an exclusively curated showcase at London Craft Week, held at the Royal Society of Arts in London on the 14th and 15th of May 2026.

Facilitated and curated by First Of March, the collaborations will feature work by Michelle Griffiths, (World Shibori Network Representative for UK/Ireland) Ruth Harries, (international textile artist) and Justyna Medon, (QEST scholar and alumni) in collaboration with Reiko Sudo of Nuno Corporation and textile specialists, Professor Goto and Mr Shibata from Japan.
